About Teeth Whitening

What is teeth whitening?

Your tooth enamel is covered by a thin coating of protein. Highly pigmented foods and drinks like red wine, dark berries, and coffee build-up on the protein, causing discoloration. Tobacco and some medication have the same effect. Even without these external factors, the enamel on your teeth wears away with age, exposing the darker dentin layer beneath.

Dr. Blank offers professional in-office teeth whitening, an effective dental treatment that restores your teeth’s brightness and whiteness in just an hour.

Why choose in-office teeth whitening?

When you want the whitest, brightest smile, in-office teeth whitening gets you the most successful results in the fastest time. Although there are many popular at-home treatments, professional teeth-whitening treatments contain a significantly stronger peroxide solution that penetrates the enamel and removes the staining and discoloration from deep within the tooth, rather than merely lightening the surface.

Teeth whitening isn’t suitable for everyone. Before scheduling a treatment, Dr. Blank performs a dental exam to make sure your teeth are healthy, cavity-free, and able to withstand the whitening solution.

What happens during an in-office teeth-whitening treatment?

Dr. Blank starts your treatment by examining your teeth’s current color and determining how white they’re likely to go to set your expectations. He inserts a guard into your mouth to pull your cheeks and lips away from the bleaching gel on your teeth, rinses and dries your teeth, and applies the bleaching gel to each tooth.

After 20 minutes, he checks the whitening process. Depending on how much lighter your teeth appear and how comfortable you are, he may repeat the process up to three more times. A typical treatment takes around one hour.

Once your teeth have reached their goal color, Dr. Blank suctions the remaining gel and rinses your teeth clean. Depending on your teeth health, you should be able to have your teeth whitened every 6-12 months.

How can you extend the results of your teeth-whitening treatment?

Teeth whitening doesn’t last forever, but you can prolong your dazzling smile by following these easy tips:

  • Drink plenty of water every time you eat and drink
  • Brush your teeth after every meal
  • Avoid pigmented food and drink
  • Avoid acidic foods
  • Avoid tobacco
